There are a few common bets in the game of craps, but those are by no means the only options available. In fact, craps offers a wide range of bets and it is worthwhile to understand all of these before you begin playing.
Craps Bet Types Explained
-
Pass Line BetThis is one of the most common bets placed on the come out roll. If the come out roll is 7 or 11, the pass line bet wins; if it is 2, 3 or 12, the pass line bet loses. It has a house edge of 1.41%.
-
Come BetThis is another common bet. It can be placed at any time, usually in the middle of a round after a point number has been established. It is like the pass line bet.
-
Field BetThis is a bet on a one roll of the dice. It wins if the shooter rolls a 3, 4, 9, 10 or 11 and loses if the shooter rolls a 5, 6, 7 or 8. It has a house edge of 2.77%.
-
Place BetThis is a bet that a specific number will be rolled before a 7. The bet can be placed at any time and has a house edge ranging from 1.5% to 6.7% depending on the number you bet on.
- Buy BetsThese are the same as place bets, but have a different payout schedule and you are required to pay a 5% commission on the bet. The house edge is 4.67%.
- Proposition BetThese bets can be made at any time and have a house edge of 11.1% to 16.67%.
-
Dont Pass LineThe opposite of pass line bets, they win if the shooter rolls a 2 or 3, pushes for a 12 and loses for a 7 or 11.
-
Dont Come Betthe opposite of a come bet, the player wins if a 7 is rolled before the point number and loses if the point number is rolled before a 7.
-
HardwaysThese are bets on paired numbers. They win if 4, 6, 8 or 10 are thrown in pairs and lose if a 7 is rolled before them or they are rolled not in pairs.
- Free Odds BetThese bets are the most advantageous to the player. They pay out the true odds of the dice, meaning that they have no house edge. The higher the odds the casino offers, the better you will do on the free odds bets.
